How does a spray tan work?

Spray tanning solution contains DHA (dihydroxyacetone), which reacts with amino acids in the outer layer of your skin to create a temporary tanned appearance. Results vary depending on your skin tone and the solution used.

Is spray tanning safe?

Spray tanning is a sunless tanning option that does not use UV exposure. A spray tan does not provide SPF or sun protection. If you have sensitive skin, allergies or concerns about ingredients, let us know before your appointment.

How do I prepare for my spray tan?

Exfoliate your body at least 24 hours before your appointment using an exfoliating glove and a gentle exfoliator. Arrive with clean, dry skin and avoid moisturiser, perfume, deodorant and other creams or lotions immediately before your tan unless advised otherwise.

What does the process involve?

For mobile appointments, your spray tan specialist will set up the tanning equipment and tent in a suitable area of your home. You can wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing during the tan. Barrier cream may be applied to areas such as elbows, nails and ankles to help achieve an even result.

You will stand inside the spray tanning tent and be guided through a few simple positions so the solution can be applied evenly. The spray may feel slightly cool. For facial application, you will be asked to close your eyes and follow the specialist’s instructions.

After application, allow the tan to dry before getting dressed. The initial guide colour may look darker than the final result and will rinse away during your first shower.

How long does a spray tan take?

A TANtastic spray tan appointment generally takes around 30 minutes, including preparation and application.

What should I wear after the spray tan?

Wear loose, dark-coloured clothing after your appointment and avoid tight clothing that may rub against your fresh tan.

How long should I wait before showering?

Generally, wait at least 4 hours before your first rinse. Always follow the rinse time recommended at your appointment for the specific solution used. When you rinse, some guide colour may wash away, but your developed tan will remain. Use lukewarm water, pat your skin dry and moisturise regularly to help maintain your tan.

Will the spray tan stain my house or furniture?

For mobile appointments, the spray is applied inside a professional tanning tent designed to contain overspray and protect the surrounding area.

How can I look after my tan?

Moisturise regularly and avoid harsh exfoliating products. Long baths, swimming and frequent exfoliation can cause a tan to fade more quickly. Continue using your normal SPF because a spray tan does not provide sun protection.

Can I shave after a spray tan?

Where possible, shave before your spray tan. Shaving exfoliates the skin and can make your tan fade more quickly if done afterwards.

 

How long after a spray tan can I exercise?

Avoid exercise for at least 4 hours and until after your first rinse. Sweat and friction can affect the developing tan and cause an uneven finish.

How long will my spray tan last?

A spray tan generally lasts around 7–10 days, depending on your skin, the solution used and how you care for your tan.
